Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special

2026 Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special: 1,252 cc V-twin adventure bike, 150 hp, 263 kg, €20,800. Full specs, versions, press reviews and rivals.

At a glance

The Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special is a big adventure bike with a 19-inch front wheel, powered by the 1,252 cc, 150 hp Revolution Max V-twin, with standard semi-active suspension. Priced from €20,800 in France, it sits between the Pan America 1250 ST (€20,250) and the Limited (€27,200), slightly below its European rivals, but Adaptive Ride Height (€800) and the quickshifter remain optional. The press, which has yet to test the 2026 model year, praises its engine, suspension and versatility, and criticises brakes that lack bite, electronics less refined than its rivals' and a limited payload; at 263 kg in running order, it is also the heaviest in its class.

What the world’s press says

No review of the 2026 Pan America 1250 Special has been published: the available tests cover the 2021 to 2025 Special, from the same generation, and the 2026 Limited (Le Repaire des Motards), which shares its platform. The overall score of 83/100 shown on this page is therefore the average of the only two numeric scores found, both for earlier model years: MCN’s 4/5 (2021 Special) and Motorcycle.com’s 85.5/100 (2025 Special).

What reviewers like: Visordown sees it as an extremely good all-round adventure bike, probably better suited to real-world riding than some established names. MCN praises the quality of the suspension and its sporty character on the road, SoyMotero the comfort, equipment and Showa suspension, MOTORRAD an eager engine that revs to 9,500 rpm and an excellent touchscreen. Motorcycle.com finds the chassis far more capable than needed and the platform still a trailblazer. Moto-Net calls it “well balanced and intelligently designed”, Le Repaire des Motards “polished and appealing”.

What they criticise: MCN finds the brakes lacking in bite and rates the Pan America below a BMW GS; in its 2022 comparison, Motorcycle.com also puts the R 1250 GS ahead, narrowly (92.27% against 91.14%). In 2025, the same publication found the electronics unrefined against improving rivals and the rear brake hard to modulate. MOTORRAD regrets a limited payload, SoyMotero the lack of a quickshifter and a stiff screen lever. Moto-Net mentions the seat height, the screen adjustment, the chain drive and vibrations from 5,000 rpm; Le Repaire des Motards the screen’s protection and a stand that is too short. On the 2026 Limited, the latter finds the suspension a little soft under braking and the quickshifter notchy.

Our review

Which Pan America in France?

Harley-Davidson France’s 2026 range lists three Pan America versions: the Pan America 1250 ST (€20,250), on 17-inch wheels, the Pan America 1250 Special (€20,800) and the Pan America 1250 Limited (€27,200), launched in January 2026. The 2021 base Pan America 1250, with conventional suspension, and the CVO Pan America are no longer in the French range. The Special costs €20,800 in Dark Billiard Gray and €21,250 in Vivid Black or Blood Orange. Its two main options are tubeless spoked wheels (€900) and Adaptive Ride Height, ARH (€800). The marketing text on the French page describes ARH as fitted, but the price table on the same page, the US page and the press kit all list it as an option; it is only standard on the Limited. The quickshifter is a Screamin’ Eagle accessory, whereas it is factory-fitted on the ST and Limited. In the United States the Special starts at $19,999, with ARH costing $1,250 extra. No A2 version is offered.

What has changed since 2021?

The Pan America has had a single generation, launched with the 2021 model year and updated in small steps. Its claimed weight in running order went from 254 kg in 2021 to 258 kg from 2022 to 2025, then to 263 kg in 2026 according to the French page (262 kg in the press kit), with no explanation from the manufacturer, even though the new exhaust is said to be 1.2 kg lighter. In 2024, peak power moved down from 9,000 to 8,750 rpm. The 2025 model year got a larger battery (17.5 Ah instead of 12 Ah) and stronger charging (390 W at 1,300 rpm instead of 300 W at 1,200 rpm); Motorcycle.com, however, dates this electrical overhaul to 2024. For 2026, the exhaust loses its mid-section can, the tank gets a two-tone livery with an inset Bar & Shield logo and colour-matched fairing, and finned engine covers recall the cylinders of air-cooled engines.

How good is the Revolution Max engine?

The Revolution Max 1250 is a liquid-cooled, 1,252 cc 60° V-twin with double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust. It is rated at 150 hp (112 kW) at 8,750 rpm. For torque, the French spec sheet gives 128 Nm at 6,750 rpm (European method) and the press kit 127 Nm (US J1349 standard). Hydraulic lifters take up valve clearance automatically: no adjustment is ever needed. A six-speed gearbox, an assist and slipper clutch and chain final drive complete the package. Harley-Davidson does not publish the Euro standard for this version.

How does it ride?

The engine is a stressed member, linking a steel front trellis to a forged aluminium mid-structure, with a one-piece cast aluminium swingarm. The Special differs from the former base version in its semi-active suspension: a 47 mm upside-down fork and a shock with automatic preload, both with 191 mm of travel. Harley-Davidson does not name their maker; the press (MCN, SoyMotero) credits Showa. The 19- and 17-inch cast wheels wear Michelin Scorcher Adventure tyres, the wheelbase is 1,585 mm and ground clearance 175 mm. Braking pairs twin 320 mm discs with four-piston Brembo radial monobloc calipers. MCN finds the package capable off-road and sporty on the road, but the brakes a little short on bite.

What equipment?

As standard, the Special gets a 6.8-inch colour TFT touchscreen with Bluetooth (calls, music and navigation through the Harley-Davidson app), five preset and four customisable riding modes, and an IMU that manages cornering ABS, linked braking, traction control and engine brake control. Add wheelie control, hill hold, tyre pressure monitoring, cruise control, the adaptive Daymaker LED headlight with banking lights and a USB-C socket.

Fuel consumption and maintenance

Harley-Davidson France quotes 5.5 L/100 km (WMTC cycle) and 125 g/km of CO2, giving a range of about 385 km from the 21.2-litre tank. MOTORRAD recorded 5.1 L/100 km on country roads and Motorcycle.com 39.9 US mpg (about 5.9 L/100 km) during a comparison test. The first service is at 1,600 km, then every 8,000 km, with inspections of certain items every 4,000 km. The warranty is 24 months with unlimited mileage.

Who is it for?

The Special is aimed at touring riders who want a versatile big adventure bike, with a 19-inch front wheel and electronic suspension, and the character of a V-twin. At €20,800 it costs slightly less than the KTM 1390 Super Adventure S (€21,149), the BMW R 1300 GS (€21,300), the Ducati Multistrada V4 (€21,590) and the Triumph Tiger 1200 GT Pro (€21,595), but it is the heaviest of the group.

Ergonomics & rider fit

Riding positionRoad adventure, upright
Wind protectionTall height-adjustable screen, handguards
Max total weight455 kg

The adjustable seat sits at 850 or 875 mm unladen. With optional Adaptive Ride Height, these drop to 830 and 855 mm; the press kit also gives, with an 81.7 kg rider aboard, 790 and 813 mm without ARH and 772 and 797 mm with it. The tall screen is height-adjustable and handguards are standard. Moto-Net finds the seat height intimidating and the screen adjustment in need of rethinking, Le Repaire des Motards criticises the screen’s protection at helmet level and SoyMotero a stiff adjustment lever, but both SoyMotero and Le Repaire des Motards praise the comfort. The gross vehicle weight rating is 455 kg, leaving about 192 kg of payload for 263 kg in running order; MOTORRAD measured 190 kg and considers that payload limited.

Warranty

2 years / Unlimited mileage (24-month manufacturer's warranty)

Harley-Davidson’s press kit specifies a first service at 1,600 km, then a service every 8,000 km, with inspections of certain systems and components every 4,000 km, detailed in the owner’s manual. That manual is not freely accessible (Harley-Davidson’s service portal requires an account), so intervals for spark plugs, coolant, air filter and chain are not given here. Hydraulic lifters eliminate valve clearance adjustment. The engine takes 4.5 litres of oil with the filter and the cooling system 2.2 litres of coolant; the air filter is washable. In France, the manufacturer’s warranty is 24 months with unlimited mileage. The Harley Optimum Warranty extension adds 1, 2 or 3 years if taken out during the warranty and before 30,000 km, then can be renewed in 12-month periods as long as the bike is under 8 years old and 80,000 km. No average service cost is published.
