Updated for 2024, it gained 10 hp, lost 14 kg and took on a much stronger off-road focus. What the world’s press says

The F 900 GS scores 4/5 from MCN and 4/5 from BikeSocial. Cycle World, RevZilla, 1000PS, SoyMotero and Le Repaire des Motards tested it without a numeric score. All tests cover the technically identical 2024 model.

What reviewers like: genuine off-road ability, precise road handling, the weight saving, an engine fuller than the F 850 GS’s, the electronics and the finish.

What they criticise: poor wind protection, a standard shock that lags behind, an engine short on character, a short range and near-essential packages that push the price up.

Key quotes

"The F900GS is perfectly capable of doing it all should you prefer a smaller, more manageable machine, but it never quite lit my fire. Whilst dynamically capable, it lacks the character of its boxer brother and indeed some of its middleweight rivals."

MCN — 2024-03

"If this was a school report, the new for 2024 F 900 GS would be B+ in all subjects – much improved from last year."

Bennetts BikeSocial — 2024-02

"The F 900 GS is improved in nearly every single aspect that makes it competitive in the middleweight ADV class. There are very few misses—the lack of compression damping on the standard shock, whereas the gains and improvements are substantial."

Cycle World — 2024-06

"The Enduro Pro package and Dynamic package are almost compulsory purchases, which also pushes up the price. All in all, a remarkable reorientation of BMW's in-line two-cylinder Enduro."

1000PS — 2024-02

"Completely redesigned, the BMW F900 GS is a big surprise. Far more compact, balanced and capable, it regains the true versatility of the first version, the German adventure bike's major asset."

Le Repaire des Motards — 2024-02 (Originally in Français)

  • Near-essential packages, high price

Our review

What is the 2026 model year?

The current F 900 GS was unveiled by BMW in September 2023 as a 2024 model. It has not changed technically since: the 2026 model year only brought new colours for the Passion (Snapper Rocks Blue matt) and GS Trophy (red rear subframe) styles, and BMW announced no changes for 2027.

Compared with the F 850 GS it replaces, BMW announces:

  • an engine enlarged from 853 to 895 cc and from 95 to 105 hp, with forged pistons;
  • 14 kg less weight, thanks notably to a plastic fuel tank, a redesigned tail and an Akrapovič silencer;
  • a fully adjustable 43 mm Showa upside-down fork;
  • ABS Pro and DTC traction control as standard;
  • higher handlebars and lower enduro footpegs for standing up.

How much does it cost?

BMW Motorrad France lists the F 900 GS at €14,500. The Passion (+€245) and GS Trophy (+€475) styles change the look. Two packages add equipment:

  • the Enduro Pro Package (€1,605): fully adjustable 45 mm Showa fork and ZF Sachs shock, raised handlebars, M Endurance chain;
  • the Dynamic Package (€580): up/down quickshifter, Riding Modes Pro.

There is no A2 version. In the United States, the F 900 GS costs $14,495.

How good is the engine?

The 895 cc 270-degree parallel twin makes 105 hp at 8,500 rpm and 93 Nm at 6,750 rpm. BikeSocial finds it fuller than the F 850 GS engine and 1000PS calls it linear. MCN is more reserved: while not underwhelming, it lacks the character of the R 1300 GS boxer and of some rivals, and throttle response is abrupt in Dynamic mode.

How does it ride?

Reviewers praise real progress off road. Cycle World speaks of a “true” off-road adventure bike at last and praises exceptional front-end feel on the road; SoyMotero finds it excellent on and off road; Le Repaire des Motards finds it far more compact, balanced and capable.

The reservations concern:

  • the standard shock, with no compression adjustment (Cycle World), under-damped (1000PS) or stiff (MCN);
  • poor wind protection, with a non-adjustable screen (BikeSocial, 1000PS, SoyMotero, Le Repaire des Motards);
  • Enduro Pro and Dynamic packages considered almost compulsory, pushing the price up (1000PS, Cycle World);
  • a short range (RevZilla, BikeSocial);
  • less versatility for touring fully loaded (SoyMotero).

Fuel consumption and maintenance

BMW quotes 4.4 L/100 km on the WMTC cycle, giving a range of about 330 km from the 14.5-litre tank. RevZilla measured the equivalent of 5.6 L/100 km during its test, with the reserve light coming on at around 180 km. The owner’s manual specifies a service with oil change every 10,000 km or every year, and a valve clearance check every 20,000 km. BMW France provides a 3-year unlimited-mileage warranty.

Recalls

In the United States, BMW recalled 2025 F 900 GS models fitted with the optional emergency call system in 2025: a software error could deactivate the system (NHTSA 25V480000). No recall was found in France (RappelConso).

Ergonomics & rider fit

Riding positionUpright, wide handlebars, enduro footpegs
Wind protectionPoor (small non-adjustable screen, hand guards)
Payload226 kg
Max total weight445 kg

The F 900 GS has off-road-focused ergonomics: higher handlebars and lower enduro footpegs than the F 850 GS to make standing up easier, which 1000PS considers a success. The seat is at 870 mm, with optional seats and a lowering kit. Wind protection is poor according to most tests, and Le Repaire des Motards finds the pillion seat narrow. Payload is 226 kg.

The valve clearance is checked and the spark plugs and air filter replaced every 20,000 km, the fork oil every 30,000 km and the brake fluid after one year and then every two years. For off-road use, the air filter should be checked every 10,000 km. BMW France offers a Service Inclusive package covering 3 years or 30,000 km for €1,170. The warranty is 3 years with unlimited mileage, extendable by one or two years (€120 or €240).
