Key quotes
"As before the XR is still a classy all-rounder that can dish out savage performance one minute and be happy at cruising in comfort the next."
"So the question isn't whether the XR is a good bike or not – it most definitely is. As a tourer there are a couple of shortcomings, sure, but as an upright superbike it's a phenomenal creation."
"The Bavarian four-cylinder makes up for this and more: it is formidable, able to pull out of corners at 2,000 rpm with clean, very tractable delivery, yet able to turn into a tiger once you start revving it."

Our review
What’s new on the 2026 S 1000 XR?
Very little: the 2026 model year brings the Sage Green metallic colour, replacing Gravity Blue, and moves the USB socket into the Dynamic package. BMW announces no changes for the 2027 model year.
The last significant update dates from 2024: 5 hp more thanks to new intake ducts and mapping, a redesigned seat raised by 10 mm, Keyless Ride, the Headlight Pro with adaptive cornering light, a more precise Shift Assistant Pro and a revised shock.
According to MOTORRAD, an S 1000 XR with a redesigned front end was homologated in Australia in 2026; BMW has not yet presented it.
How much does it cost?
BMW Motorrad France lists the S 1000 XR at €20,800 in Black storm, and €21,225 in Sage Green. The main packages:
- Touring package, €1,090: luggage rack, hand guards, centre stand, heated grips, GPS preparation and tyre pressure monitoring;
- Dynamic package, €1,065: cruise control, Dynamic ESA Pro suspension, Shift Assistant Pro and USB socket;
- M package, €3,280: M Motorsport colours, forged wheels, lightweight battery, sports silencer and M seat.
The warranty is 3 years with unlimited mileage. In the US, the 2027 S 1000 XR sells for $18,825.
How good is the engine?
The 999 cc four-cylinder (80 x 49.7 mm), derived from the S 1000 RR’s, makes 170 hp at 11,000 rpm and 114 Nm at 9,250 rpm. BMW quotes 0-100 km/h in 3.3 s and over 250 km/h. Every reviewer makes it the highlight: BikeSocial likens it to a superbike engine, inSella calls it “formidable”, flexible from 2,000 rpm.
Reservations concern vibration at high revs (BikeSocial, MCN, Motorbox, inSella) and a lack of low-rpm torque according to MCN and BikeSocial.
How does it ride?
At 227 kg wet, with an aluminium frame and Dynamic ESA semi-active suspension as standard, the S 1000 XR is rated precise and very agile for its size (bikesales, inSella). BikeSocial praises the semi-active suspension, solo or loaded. The reservations concern:
- touring comfort that could be better, with damping never truly comfortable according to 1000PS;
- a tall seat (MCN, inSella) and bent knees for tall riders (1000PS);
- limited wind protection (Motorbox, inSella, bikesales);
- expensive options: cruise control and the quickshifter are in the Dynamic package.
Fuel consumption and maintenance
BMW quotes 6.2 L/100 km on the WMTC cycle. Tests record 6.1 to 7 L/100 km, giving about 320 km of range from 20 litres. The owner’s manual specifies a service with oil change and air filter replacement every 10,000 km or every year, and a valve clearance check every 30,000 km.
Recalls
A European recall from January 2025 concerns the oil filter fitting on several BMW four-cylinders, including the S 1000 XR, built up to 17 October 2024. The fault occurs above 12,500 rpm, a speed the S 1000 XR, limited to 12,000 rpm, does not reach.
