GasGas ES 700

2024 GasGas ES 700: 74 hp single, 147.5 kg without fuel, €11,749. Full specs, press reviews, maintenance and rivals.

At a glance

The GasGas ES 700 is a dual-sport bike, halfway between an enduro and an adventure bike, built on the KTM 690 Enduro R platform: a 692.7 cc, 74 hp single homologated to Euro 5 only, 147.5 kg without fuel and a standard quickshifter. Still in GasGas France's range at €11,749 as a 2024 model, it has had no 2025, 2026 or 2027 model year, has been dropped from the UK, US and Australian ranges, and did not get the 79 hp Euro 5+ engine its KTM and Husqvarna sisters adopted in 2026. Reviewers praise its light weight, versatility and electronics, but criticise suspension that gives poor grip feedback, a tall and spartan seat and the spacing of the lower gears.

MCN (KTM 690 Enduro R 2020)2020-11

Review of the KTM 690 Enduro R, which shares the ES 700's engine and platform: a trail bike "overdosed on steroids" for experienced riders only, with superb off-road traction control; pricey and clumsy in deep sand.

4/5
1000PS (essai longue durée)2023-10

Very versatile, at ease even on the motorway at 140 km/h, outstanding Offroad ABS and a standard quickshifter; an engine that needs revs, harsh suspension that gives poor front grip feedback, low handlebars tiring when standing, a spartan seat and a 13.5-litre tank.

1000PS (comparatif Ténéré 700)2023-10

50 kg lighter than the Yamaha Ténéré 700: much easier off-road, very refined Offroad ABS; less low-down torque than the Yamaha's twin, a tiring standing position downhill and uncommunicative front suspension.

1000PS (Bosnia Rally 2023)2023-08

A true sport enduro, closer to the 450s than to adventure bikes, a very lively engine, excellent brakes and switchable ABS, plenty of suspension reserve; first gear too short and second too long, firm suspension at low speed, low handlebars and a fork seal that leaked.

Cycle World2022-05

A true dual-sport, light and very capable compared with twin-cylinder adventure bikes, road and off-road ABS and traction control, quickshifter, long service intervals; tall seat, little wind protection, a little soft and heavy from a dirt-bike perspective, fork could do better on broken ground.

Motociclismo.es2022-05

A lively, playful trail bike with a big-enduro feel, comfortable WP suspension, three-level ABS and unobtrusive traction control; exhaust heat on the left calf, limited turning circle, a quickshifter that cannot be switched off and triggers with enduro boots.

Motorrad2022-05

A review focused mainly on the SM 700: the ES 700 works just as well, with a huge amount of power off-road; the switchable front ABS was never needed during the test.

Motorrad & Reisen2022-05

Stable, well-balanced chassis and progressive brakes on trails; first two gears far too long on technical terrain, protruding clutch cover quickly scratched, header pipe guard in the way when standing.

Press synthesis

What the world’s press says

No review of the ES 700 gives it a numeric score. The 80/100 meta-score is therefore based on the closest score available: MCN’s 4/5 for the KTM 690 Enduro R (review published in November 2020), which shares the engine and platform of the 2022-2024 ES 700. The ES 700 itself was tested without a score by 1000PS (long-term test, Bosnia Rally 2023 and a comparison with the Yamaha Ténéré 700), Cycle World, Motociclismo, Motorrad and Motorrad & Reisen, on the 2022 and 2023 model years, identical to the 2024 apart from the clutch actuation. No review by a French publication was found.

What reviewers like: rare versatility between road and off-road (Cycle World, Motorrad & Reisen, and 1000PS, which finds it comfortable up to 140 km/h on the motorway), a light weight that makes it far easier than a twin-cylinder adventure bike off-road (Cycle World, 1000PS), a very lively and powerful engine (1000PS, Motorrad), outstanding Offroad ABS (1000PS) and progressive brakes (Motorrad & Reisen). Motociclismo likes the comfortable WP suspension and unobtrusive traction control, Cycle World the standard quickshifter and long service intervals.

What they criticise: suspension that gives poor feedback on front-wheel grip (1000PS) and a fork that could do better on broken ground (Cycle World), the spacing of the lower gears (1000PS, Motorrad & Reisen), handlebars too low for riding standing up and a spartan seat (1000PS), a tall seat and little wind protection (Cycle World). Motociclismo notes exhaust heat on the left calf, a limited turning circle and a quickshifter that cannot be switched off and triggers with enduro boots; Motorrad & Reisen a protruding clutch cover that is quickly scratched.

The verdict is consistent from one review to the next: 1000PS places it closer to 450 cc enduros than to adventure bikes, and Cycle World recommends it to those who prefer light weight and off-road ability over the comfort of a twin.

Key quotes

"You have to be able to live with its spartan equipment and forgive it a few small shortcomings, but in return the ES 700 offers off-road performance and versatility like hardly any other enduro."

1000PS (essai longue durée) — 2023-10 (Originally in Deutsch)

"As a genuine sport enduro, the GasGas ES 700 feels closer to the 450s than to its actual classmates."

1000PS (Bosnia Rally 2023) — 2023-08 (Originally in Deutsch)

"The Gas Gas's chassis doesn't give the best feedback from the ground. On fine gravel in particular, the front wheel often tucks in corners as a result."

1000PS (comparatif Ténéré 700) — 2023-10 (Originally in Deutsch)

"The ES 700 enduro bike strikes a different but equal balance as a very capable adventure bike for those who would sacrifice the speed and comfort of a twin-cylinder machine for a lighter bike with more off-road performance."

Cycle World — 2022-05

"It is a lively, relaxed trail bike that likes to find mixed-pace sections, fast and twisty, and with which we can venture into more technical, enduro-style terrain, because in the end it conveys that big-enduro feel."

Motociclismo.es — 2022-05 (Originally in Español)

"Of the ES 700 enduro version, we can say that it works just as well as the supermoto and has a huge amount of power on tap for riding off-road."

Motorrad — 2022-05 (Originally in Deutsch)

"The enduro really comes pretty close to the concept of the universal machine, perfectly suited to the road and commuting as well as to hearty off-road adventures."

Motorrad & Reisen — 2022-05 (Originally in Deutsch)

Our review

Is it still on sale?

Yes, but as an end-of-line model. GasGas France still lists the 2024 ES 700 in its “Travel” range, with a price and a configurator. Yet it is the last model year produced: there is no 2025, 2026 or 2027 ES 700, and GasGas has issued no communication about the model since its 2022 launch. It has already disappeared from the UK, US and Australian ranges.

The ES 700 is homologated to Euro 5 only. In 2026, its sisters the KTM 690 Enduro R and Husqvarna 701 Enduro moved to a 79 hp Euro 5+ engine, with a TFT screen and new bodywork. GasGas did not offer a version of it.

Price and versions

GasGas France lists the 2024 ES 700 at €11,749, compared with €11,549 for the 2022 model year. That makes it €400 cheaper than the 2027 KTM 690 Enduro R and Husqvarna 701 Enduro (€12,149). There is only one version, in red. An A2 map limits power to 30 kW for A2 licence holders, with no published price.

How good is the engine?

The 692.7 cc LC4 single (105 x 80 mm) makes 74 hp (55 kW) at 8,000 rpm and 73.5 Nm at 6,500 rpm. It has twin-spark ignition, ride-by-wire, a second balancer shaft and an APTC slipper clutch with hydraulic actuation, handled on the 2024 model year by a Braktec system intended to improve quickshifter operation. 1000PS and Motorrad find it very lively and powerful off-road, but 1000PS notes that it needs revs and has less low-down torque than the Yamaha Ténéré 700’s twin. The spacing of the lower gears divides opinion: 1000PS finds first too short and second too long, Motorrad & Reisen the first two far too long on technical terrain.

How does it ride?

The chromoly steel trellis frame is paired with a polyamide fuel tank that doubles as the rear subframe. The 48 mm WP XPLOR upside-down fork and the linkage-mounted WP XPLOR shock each offer 250 mm of travel and are fully adjustable. Brembo brakes pair a 300 mm front disc with a two-piston caliper. The bike weighs 147.5 kg without fuel according to GasGas France (147.8 kg according to the manual). Its tank holds 13.5 litres (13.3 according to the manual) and its seat stands at 935 mm.

Cycle World finds it light and very capable compared with twin-cylinder adventure bikes, and 1000PS points out that it weighs 50 kg less than a Ténéré 700. The suspension is more debated: comfortable for Motociclismo, it gives poor feedback on front-wheel grip for 1000PS, and Cycle World finds the fork could do better on broken ground.

Electronics

The ES 700 offers two ride modes, Street and Sport, the latter intended for off-road use. Traction control works in corners and can be switched off. The Bosch 9.1 MP ABS also works in corners; its Offroad mode keeps ABS on the front wheel only, and it can be fully disabled. The two-way Quickshifter+ is standard, whereas it is optional on the KTM and Husqvarna. There is no cruise control and no connectivity, and the dash is a simple segment display.

Fuel consumption and maintenance

GasGas quoted 4.3 L/100 km for the 2022 model year, without specifying the test cycle; the figure no longer appears on the 2024 page. It would give a theoretical range of about 315 km. The 2024 manual calls for an oil change every 10,000 km or 12 months, with a valve clearance check at every service, and spark plug replacement every 20,000 km.

Who is it for?

The ES 700 is aimed at experienced riders who want a light, powerful bike capable of road stages as well as difficult trails. Its tall seat and lack of wind protection make it better suited to taller riders. Its supermoto version, the GasGas SM 700, uses the same engine with 17-inch wheels. Buyers who prefer the Euro 5+ engine and TFT screen will look at the KTM 690 Enduro R or the Husqvarna 701 Enduro.

Ergonomics & rider fit

Riding positionEnduro: upright, long flat 935 mm seat, tapered aluminium handlebars (28/22 mm)
Wind protectionNone (no screen or fairing)
Max total weight350 kg

The ES 700 offers an enduro riding position, upright, with a long flat seat at 935 mm and tapered aluminium handlebars. It has neither screen nor fairing, and Cycle World notes the lack of wind protection. 1000PS finds the handlebars too low for riding standing up, especially downhill, and the seat spartan. Motorrad & Reisen finds the header pipe guard gets in the way when standing, and Motociclismo reports exhaust heat on the left calf and a limited turning circle. The maximum permissible weight is 350 kg; GasGas does not publish the payload.
